A Bayesian state-space model to estimate population biomass with catch and limited survey data: application to the thornback ray (Raja clavata) in the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Marandel, Florianne; Lorance, Pascal; Trenkel, Verena M..
The thornback ray (Raja clavata) in the Bay of Biscay is presumed to have declined during the 20th Century. To evaluate this decline and estimate biomass trajectories, a hypothetical catch time series was created for the period 1903-2013. A Bayesian state-space biomass production model with a Schaefer production function was fitted to the hypothetical catch time series and to a shorter research vessel Catch Per Unit Eeffort (CPUE) time series (1973-2013, with missing years). A censored likelihood made it possible to obtain biomass estimates without a CPUE time series or only with an estimate of biomass depletion. A simulation-estimation approach showed a high sensitivity of results to the prior for the intrinsic growth rate. The model provided biomass...

A year-class curve analysis to estimate mortality of Atlantic bluefin tuna caught by the Norwegian fishery from 1956 to 1979 ArchiMer
Fromentin, Jean-marc; Restrepo, Victor.
At the ICCAT symposium on bluefin tuna that held in Santander in April 2008, Tangen et al.(2009) presented a first quantification of the fishing effort deployed by the Norwegian fishery targeting bluefin tuna in the North Sea and Norwegian Sea. Using a year-class curve analysis on the Norwegian CPUE, this document presents the first estimates of mortality rates of Atlantic bluefin tuna that migrated north from the mid-1950s to the late 1970s. The results indicate that bluefin tuna would have experienced a total mortality rate (Z) of 0.2 to 0.4 yr-1 (i.e. F at around 0.3 yr-1) during the late 1950s, 0.2 yr-1 during the 1960s and 0.1 yr-1 afterwards (assuming M=0.1 yr-1). These results appear to be rather robust and consistent with the VPA estimates from the...

Ben Abdallah, L.; Hattour, A.; Guennegan, Y..

Hattour, A.; Ben Abdallah, L.; Guennegan, Y..
Within the frame of the National Program (PNM), 'Assessment of Marine Tunisian Resources' (1996-1999), two prospecting surveys on small pelagic fishes, have been led in narrow collaboration with French Institute IFREMER. Their objectives were to specify the relative fishes abundance, their spatial-temporal variability but also to quantify the maximum sustainable yield (MSY) of this resource. A third important goal was to familiarize a Tunisian scientist team, with numerical methods and data processing used during the cruises (reading of echograms, treatments of data, etc.) in stocks assessment. It is known that the indirect stocks assessment methods of small pelagic species is not reliable, reason for which we opted to apply echo - integration techniques....

Adult-mediated connectivity affects inferences on population dynamics and stock assessment of nursery-dependent fish populations ArchiMer
Archarnbault, Benoit; Le Pape, Olivier; Baulier, Loic; Vermard, Youen; Veron, Matthieu; Rivot, Etienne.
We explore how alternative hypotheses on the degree of mixing among local subpopulations affect statistical inferences on the dynamics and stock assessment of a harvested flatfish population, namely, the common sole population in the Eastern Channel (ICES area VIId). The current paradigm considers a single, well-mixed, spatially homogeneous population with juveniles from all coastal nursery grounds along the French and UK coasts that contribute to a single adult population and one pool of eggs. Based on the available data and ecological knowledge, we developed a spatial Bayesian integrated life-cycle model that consists of three subpopulations (one near the UK coast and two near the French coast, denoted UK, West FR and East FR, respectively) supported by...

Existing methods to assess the biomass of reared oyster's stocks are ail based on aerial photographs and field data. In this study, we propose an automatic processing of the digitized aerial photographs making use of advanced vision tools such as mathematical morphology. The implemented a1gorithms are described. They give enough convincing results to suggest further developments. However, this method requires the use of digital images. To this respect, a part of this paper deals with data acquisition problems. We particularly study the feasibility of using airborne video recording system. Such device should give a quite accurate information, easier to process than the classical aerial photographs.

Inacio, A.; Barros, P.C..

OceanDocs
Wöhler, O.C.; Giussi, A.R.; Hansen, J.E..
Sequential population analysis on Long Tail Hake (Macruronus magellanicus)from the Southwest Atlantic. Years 1985-1995. VPA on the Long Tail Hake (Macruronus magellanicus), based on data covering the years 1985 up to 1995, was performed to assess the current state of the stock. Simulation trials, inducing uncertainty about both the natural mortality rate and recruitment were also accomplished, to evaluate the risk of overfishing which is associated to different fishing alternatives, always under the assumption of a single and closed Long Tail Hake population. CPUE data were not appropriate for tunning, so the traditional VPA has been applied. During the period of study, stock biomass and spawning stock biomass showed an increased trend. Long and short-term...

OceanDocs
Wöhler, O.C.; Cordo, H.D.; Hansen, J.E.; Cassia, M.C..
The current status of southern blue whiting Micromesistius australis stock is described. A single, closed fish population is assumed to inhabit the SW Atlantic. Based on catch data corresponding to years 1987-1997, a sequential analysis on the stock is carried out (Cohort Analysis). Under an adaptative framework, catch per unit of effort data from commercial vessels are used to fit the model. Two commercial fleets are used in the fitting, i.e. Polish vessels (1987-1994)and Argentine surimi factory vessels (1991-1997). Results indicate that both, total stock biomass and spawning stock biomass would have declined. Total biomass would have decreased from a maximum close to 1.4 million tons in 1990 down to 0.5 mt in 1997 whereas the current spawning stock...

Hernandez, D.R.; Bezzi, S.I.; Ibañez, P.M..
Gain contribution by stratification in hake (Merluccius hubbsi) biomass estimation with respect to a simple random sampling based on the same sample size is analyzed. Considering as objective hake biomass assessment, curves which relate precision reached in estimations to the sample size are established. Data were from total hake biomass surveys carried out from 1996 through 1999 hake management units distributed North and South of 41°S Argentine Sea are analyzed separately. Stratification used at present allows to obtain very variable gains in precision associated to biomass with estimations, in the North management unit, with a maximun of 88 in 1996 and no gain in 1997. The South management unit presents also variable results but always with important...

Analysis and prediction of yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) catch rates of longline fisheries in the western Indian Ocean using a neural network. OceanDocs
Nishida, T.; Komatsu, T..
Strengthening tuna management is one of the primary tasks for the new Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC). Stock assessment and the prediction of the dynamics of the tuna resources will become increasingly important research topics because they provide the basic information for the management decision process. Under these circumstances, this paper attempts to develop the stock analyses and prediction techniques using neural networks. As a first step and as a test study, analyses and predictions of catch rates of the Japanese yellowfin tuna longline fisheries are attempted.

Irusta, G.; Hernandez, D.R..
The status of hake (Merluccius hubbsi) resource south of 41°S in the Argentine Sea was evaluated with the Biomass Dynamic Model of Pella and Tomlinson. Results indicate that the population was overexploited and in a low biological production level (B99 BMSY1 because, as of 1998, catches always exceeded the surplus production corresponding to each year and the (MSY) Maximum Sustainable Yield. In 1993 increase of landings accelerated declination of biomass. For 1999 the MSY was estimated at 244,773 t and the replacement catch at 147,389 t. Landings corresponding to 1998 surpassed the MSY in 145,000 t and the replacement catch in 242,611 t.

Heral, Maurice; Deslous-paoli, Jean-marc; Prou, Jean.
After a short bibliographical study of the different approaches for determination of the trophic capacity of a bay for molluscs culture, the authors, with a global mode, show the relations between the growth performance of the oysters Crassostrea gigas in relation with the cultivated stocks. The volumes of consumed and assimilated food are calculated for the stocks in relation with the incoming volumes of water in the bay and the residence time for neap tide and spring tide. The authors find a decrease of growth rate in relation with the volume of consumed food. When it is above 60% and when the volume of assimilated food is above 20%, there is a large decrease of the growth of oysters.

Are commercial logbook and scientific CPUE data useful for characterizing the spatial and seasonal distribution of exploited populations? The case of the Celtic Sea whiting ArchiMer
Verdoit, Marion; Pelletier, Dominique; Bellail, Robert.
A statistical approach is proposed to utilize the information contained both in scientific surveys and commercial fishing logbooks, in order to determine spatial and temporal distributions of recruiting and spawning fish of exploited populations. The approach is based on multivariate descriptive methods including ordination methods and classification techniques. A typology involving a principal component analysis (PCA), followed by a hierarchical ascending classification (HAC), is applied to both scientific and commercial data. PCA that accounts for spatial and temporal contiguities were performed. These analyses allow to compare structures observed at global and local scales, with those observed without focusing on a particular scale. The method is...

Rey-valette, H; Martins, P.
A new programme concerning the experimentation of about thirty Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) is to start in the Cape Verde Islands at the end of 1999. In this context, this communication is intended: - to evaluate the halieutic, economic and social conditions of the artisanal fishery in this archipelago, notably in terms of assets and constraints. Although these conditions are very heterogeneous depending on islands, the fads seem to be able to help the stabilization and the development of the fishing activities, disadvantaged by a low productivity, limited operating ranges of boats, and very irregular outings at sea. But the narrowness of the domestic market is likely to cause drops in the fish prices if the production increases, while the absence of...

Caill-milly, Nathalie; Duclercq, Benoit; Morandeau, Gilles.
Between 1980 and 1986, some Arcachon oyster farmers took up breeding the Japanese clam on the foreshore (Robert et Deltreil, 1990). This production was short lived. The steep fall in prices due to economic competition from Spain, Portugal, Italy and Tunisia, predator action such as the trigger fish (Popovsky et al., 1999), added to the significant amount of mortality that occurred in the summer and autumn of 1992 that affected two-thirds of the total stock, led to clam farming being abandoned at the end of the 1980s. In the Arcachon basin, the Japanese clam (Ruditapes philippinarum) population, now natural to the area, has found favourable conditions for development and is expanding rapidly there. This species has been supplanting the local species...
